The News Journal has done it again. Those of you that read it, or have to read, as I do, to keep up with the anti’s, probably saw the editorial page on Monday’s edition that contained the cartoon below. Look closely and you will see how offensive the cartoon really is. Since you are probably an NRA member and proud of it, you now know how the Editorial Board of the News Journal really feels about you. You are a facist and a nazi. (Hint, look at the image in the middle with the hat)
Think about it. Because you believe in the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution and Article I, Section 20 of the Delaware Constitution you are equated with hate groups. Make you feel warm and fuzzy. NOT ME. I feel outrage, indignation and slandered. I hope the 15,000 plus DSSA members, NRA members and members of affiliated clubs all feel that way. This is just another example of fake news, lamestream media bias and scorn for those that believe in our fundamental God given rights. Rep. Jeff Spiegelman, 11th District, of the Delaware House of Representatives wrote the following letter to the News Journal:
“August 22, 2017
Dear Editor,
A recent News Journal political cartoon depicted NRA members as Nazis. As a Jewish man, who happens to be an NRA member, I am disappointed in the decision of the paper to run with this message. If the point trying to be made was that the Klan and Neo-Nazis should be stopped and opposed by civilization, then it could have been just as well stated without including a trade group with a diverse membership.
If the cartoon had depicted the NRA belonging in an internment camp, it may have been offensive to many Asian Americans who may or may not be NRA members. If the cartoon had depicted the NRA as slave catchers, it may have been offensive to African Americans who may or may not have been NRA members.
I also find it ironic that an organization, such as the NRA, that fights for individuals’ constitutionally-protected freedoms for all races and religions was depicted as being equated with Nazis.
This is just another example of unnecessarily demonizing an entire organization’s membership with whom we disagree on a political issue like firearms. As Americans, we should come together to oppose hate groups in all their form. Likening a trade association to Nazis and the Klan runs contrary to this ideal. The sacred freedoms we enjoy in this country, including freedom of speech and of the press, also carry with them a requirement for selective tact and responsibility. In this, I believe the political cartoon fell flat.
Sincerely,
Jeff Spiegelman
State Representative, 11th District”
If you are as offended and outraged as I am please take the time to write to the News Journal and respectfully express your opinion. Don’t stoop to their level and be offensive.
